The Walled City Authority has declared more than 300 buildings in the Walled City of Lahore unsafe, raising serious concerns regarding public safety in the historic area.
The authority submitted a detailed report to the Lahore High Court as part of a petition opposing permission for kite-flying activities.
According to the report, a comprehensive survey of dangerous and dilapidated buildings in the Walled City was completed before Basant, during which the structural condition and safety status of the buildings were thoroughly assessed.
The report states that a total of 346 dilapidated buildings were identified in the Walled City, out of which 183 were declared beyond repair. Additionally, 92 extremely deteriorated buildings were vacated due to severe safety risks.
It further revealed that 254 dangerous buildings are still occupied despite being declared unsafe. Among these inhabited structures, 103 buildings have been categorized as beyond repair, while 151 have been identified as repairable. Meanwhile, among the vacated buildings, 80 were declared fit for demolition and 12 were considered repairable.
The report also highlighted that the rooftops of these dangerous buildings are unsafe for Basant-related activities, posing a serious risk to human life. In response, the Walled City Authority has been installing warning notices and awareness banners in the affected areas to inform the public about potential dangers.
