The death toll from a gas cylinder explosion in Karachi’s Soldier Bazaar area has risen to 16, while authorities fear that more people may still be trapped under the debris.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 4 am when a gas cylinder exploded inside a residential building, causing part of the structure to collapse. Upon receiving information, police cordoned off the area and tightened security, while rescue teams immediately launched search and rescue operations.
Rescue officials stated that the affected building was three stories high, with one room on each floor. Narrow streets and limited access have made rescue efforts challenging, but teams continue to remove debris in an effort to reach any survivors.
According to rescue sources, 16 bodies have so far been recovered from the rubble, including four children and six women. More than 12 injured individuals have been shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Director General Rescue 1122 Brigadier Wajid told the media that the explosion occurred on the first floor of the building and was likely caused by a gas cylinder or a gas suction machine. He added that rescue teams are using specialized equipment to cut through iron structures and clear debris to access those possibly trapped underneath.
He stated that there is a possibility that more individuals remain trapped under the rubble, and the rescue operation is continuing with utmost caution.
Meanwhile, DIG East Dr. Farrukh Lanjar said initial information suggests that the explosion was caused by a gas leak. He confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing and that there is a possibility of another body being trapped under the debris.
He further stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and the exact nature of the explosion will be determined after a chemical examination. The relevant department will also assess whether the building was legal or illegal, and action will be taken against those found responsible.
