The Election Commission has summoned Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in his personal capacity over the delay in local government elections in Islamabad. The case was heard by a five member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
During the hearing, the Interior Secretary failed to appear before the Election Commission. As a result, the commission issued a contempt notice against him. The Chief Election Commissioner questioned why the Interior Secretary did not attend the hearing.
The Chief Election Commissioner remarked that if the Interior Secretary fails to appear, the federal interior minister will be summoned in person at the next hearing to explain the matter before the commission. He also directed ICT officials to convey the decision to the relevant authorities.
Officials of the Election Commission stated that a letter had been sent to the Interior Secretary but there was no cooperation and no response was received. Following this, the Chief Election Commissioner directed that a contempt of Election Commission notice be issued against the Interior Secretary.
