A new medical study has found that taking multivitamins daily may help slow the aging process and reduce the rate at which biological age increases.
According to research conducted at Mass General Brigham Hospital in the United States, consistent use of multivitamins for two years can slow the pace of biological aging.
Experts explained that while age is generally determined by date of birth, known as chronological age, there is also a biological age that reflects the condition of a person’s physical and mental functions.
The study noted that factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences affect biological age, and a higher biological age is often associated with an increased risk of various diseases.
A total of 958 healthy participants with an average age of about 70 years were included in the research. The participants were divided into four groups and were given different types of supplements during the study period.
One group was given cocoa extract along with multivitamins, another received cocoa extract with a multivitamin placebo, the third group received a cocoa extract placebo with multivitamins, while the fourth group was given placebos for both supplements.
Blood samples were collected from the participants at the beginning of the study and then again after one year and two years for analysis.
The findings showed that individuals who took multivitamins experienced a slower increase in biological age, with an overall reduction of nearly four months in biological aging over the two year period.
Researchers noted that the effect was more noticeable among individuals whose biological age was increasing more rapidly.
However, the researchers emphasized that further studies are required to confirm these results, though current evidence indicates that multivitamin use does not pose significant health risks.
