The government has increased the overall capacity of the country’s ports to promote transshipment and enhance trade efficiency.
According to sources, under this initiative, Karachi Port Trust has been activated with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs, while Port Qasim Authority has been made operational with a capacity of 12,500 TEUs, significantly boosting container handling capabilities.
Similarly, Gwadar Port Authority has been activated with a capacity of 5,000 TEUs, which is expected to improve regional and international trade activity.
Sources stated that Karachi Port has received 8,000 containers, dispatched 3,500, and currently holds a balance of 4,500 containers, while 3,485 containers are present at Port Qasim.
Additionally, scanning charges have been reduced by 50 percent, after which terminal operators also immediately reduced their charges by 25 percent, leading to lower business costs.
According to sources, port fees for vessels bringing transshipment cargo have also been reduced by up to 60 percent to attract more shipping activity.
The government has also approved sea-to-air transshipment, which is expected to improve logistics efficiency and expand trade opportunities.
