Karachi’s Crumbling Roads Turn Deadly, Over 100 Killed in Two Months

Karachi’s deteriorating road conditions have become increasingly dangerous for residents, with poor infrastructure and deep potholes contributing to a sharp rise in fatalities during the first two months of 2026, as several major roads have turned into high-risk zones.

According to data released by a local welfare organization and other credible sources, more than 100 people lost their lives in road accidents across the city during January and February 2026, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The report states that the victims include 73 men, 12 women, and 15 children, while more than 1,048 people were seriously injured in these incidents, with many left permanently disabled, underscoring the alarming scale of the crisis.

Several major routes, including Safora Goth to Nipa Chowrangi, Jail Road, Hassan Square, and the National Highway, have been declared red zones due to the high number of accidents and extremely poor road conditions.

The report further reveals that most accidents occur at night, primarily due to inadequate street lighting and sudden deep potholes, while medical experts at Jinnah Hospital report dozens of cases daily involving fractures and head injuries caused by road conditions.

Meanwhile, citizens and civil society groups have expressed strong anger and concern over the situation, questioning the silence of authorities, and stating that delays in development work and the use of substandard materials are putting human lives at serious risk.
