Chamber hearing on the issue of funds for elections in Punjab today. The court said that the provision of funds for the election is more important than contempt proceedings.
Under the leadership of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, a bench of the Supreme Court in Punjab had issued notices to the Secretary Treasury, Attorney General, Secretary Election Commission, and Governor State Bank on April 14th regarding the provision of funds for elections in Punjab.
According to the court’s notice, the federal government did not provide funds as per the Election Commission’s report, and the non-provision of funds is a violation of court orders, the consequences of which are evident in the law.
The court stated in its notice that the provision of funds for elections is more important than contempt of court proceedings.
The court had also ordered the Secretary Election Commission to provide all records related to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections.
Chief Justice had summoned all officers to the Chamber on April 14th.
It should be noted that on April 11th, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had submitted a report on the provision of funds worth Rs. 21 billion for elections to the Supreme Court. The report stated that the government was hesitant to release the said funds, while the federal government was seeking opportunities not to implement the decision to hold elections on May 14th by the Supreme Court.
