Amid the risk of extreme heat and a possible heatwave in Karachi, Mayor Murtaza Wahab has directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to take emergency measures, including the establishment of special heatwave wards in all government-run hospitals to ensure timely medical care for citizens.
According to the issued directives, senior medical officials and heads of hospitals have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, effective cooling systems, and the availability of air conditioning in these wards, particularly considering the risks faced by the elderly, children, and laborers.
They have also been directed to maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, and oral rehydration solutions, while ensuring the round-the-clock presence of trained doctors and paramedical staff to provide immediate medical assistance in emergencies.
Additionally, hospitals have been instructed to ensure the availability of clean drinking water and to run public awareness campaigns regarding heat safety, while the mayor has sought daily reports from concerned officials to monitor the situation effectively.
