The global football body FIFA has made a significant and unprecedented decision by allowing a women’s football team composed of Afghan refugees to participate in international competitions, marking a historic development in the world of sports.
The Afghan women’s refugee football team, whose members were forced to leave their country nearly five years ago following the rise of Taliban rule, has now been officially recognized as eligible to compete on the global stage.
During a council meeting in Vancouver, Canada, FIFA approved amendments to its regulations, under which the refugee team has been formally recognized and will compete as Afghan Women United.
FIFA exercised special authority in light of extraordinary circumstances and granted the Afghan Women United team the status of Afghanistan’s national women’s team, enabling them to participate internationally as an official national side for the first time.
Although the team will not qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, it will be eligible to compete in the qualification rounds for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which is seen as a major opportunity.
In a statement, the FIFA president said he is proud of the inspiring journey undertaken by Afghan Women United, adding that the initiative aims to create opportunities for teams that are unable to register for FIFA competitions due to exceptional circumstances.
He further stated that the decision would also help other member associations work with their respective confederations to take the next steps in representing their teams on the international stage.
