Iran has set a new condition for participating in its FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in the United States, warning that games could be halted if controversial flags are displayed or political chants are directed against the Iranian team.
According to international media reports, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said FIFA has been formally informed of Tehran’s concerns.
He added that FIFA has assured Iranian officials that no disruptive incidents are expected during Iran’s match against Egypt.
Earlier this year, protesters at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver called for Iran to be banned from the tournament, arguing that the national team represents state institutions rather than the Iranian people.
Reports also indicate that the Iranian team has faced additional challenges, including the withdrawal of ticket allocations originally designated for Iranian supporters.
Iran’s national team is currently training in Tijuana, Mexico, and will only enter the United States shortly before its matches.
The team is expected to return to Mexico after each game.
Iran, placed in Group G, will begin its World Cup campaign against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles.
It will then face Belgium at the same venue before taking on Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
