Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan has formally signed the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” as a mediator between the United States and Iran.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the memorandum carries the signatures of US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while Pakistan has endorsed the agreement as a facilitating party.
The Prime Minister said the agreement demonstrates a commitment by both Washington and Tehran to resolve disputes through diplomacy and dialogue.
Under the reported framework, Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, while the United States would lift its naval blockade measures.
Pakistan, alongside Qatar, is expected to participate in a formal commemorative event in Switzerland on 19 June 2026, where technical-level discussions are also anticipated.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the diplomatic efforts of President Donald Trump and acknowledged the contributions of key negotiators from both sides.
He also commended the roles played by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt in supporting the diplomatic process.
The Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, describing his efforts and diplomatic engagement as important to advancing regional peace.
He expressed hope that the Islamabad Memorandum would contribute to lasting peace, stability, mutual trust and economic cooperation across the region.
