Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that more than one million undocumented migrants have applied under the government’s large-scale legalization program.
According to international media reports, while many European countries are tightening measures against illegal immigration, Spain is continuing its initiative to grant legal status to undocumented migrants living in the country.
The Spanish government said Tuesday was the final day for submitting applications, with more than one million people applying before the deadline.
When Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s left-wing government launched the program in April, it had initially estimated that around 500,000 migrants—most of them from Latin American countries—would benefit from the scheme.
Officials said the unexpectedly high number of applications reflects strong demand for legal residency and work opportunities among undocumented migrants.
