The Supreme Court has ordered the Attorney General to collect the record of parliamentary proceedings regarding the “Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act 2023” during a hearing on petitions against the Act due to a decrease in the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s powers.
The 8-member larger bench of the Supreme Court heard the petitions against the Act, including Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Aijazul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha Malik, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Justice Shahid Waheed.
At the start of the hearing, Attorney General Mansoor Awan said that a request had been filed for the formation of a full court. The Pakistan Muslim League (N) also submitted a request to the court for the formation of a full court. Justice Aijazul Ahsan remarked that their request has not been considered yet.
The Chief Justice inquired whether the documents had been collected, to which the Attorney General replied that it is expected that the record of parliamentary proceedings will be available by tomorrow. The office of the speaker has also been contacted in a formal and informal manner.
