Prime Minister’s Address at the One Water Summit!
Moreover, while addressing the One Water Summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude for the timely meeting on the issue of water security. He thanked Saudi Arabia, France, Kazakhstan, and the World Bank and expressed pride in being part of the Global Water Organization initiative, highlighting that life depends on water.
Shehbaz Sharif said that water conservation is among the key challenges facing humanity, and the resources that sustain life are under threat. Half of the world’s population experiences water shortages, billions live without clean water, and 30% of Pakistan’s population faces drought. Seventy percent of Pakistan’s land comprises barren and semi-arid areas, and its rivers, glaciers, and water reservoirs are decreasing.
He added that water transcends boundaries, connecting nations and forming ecosystems. Pakistan places special importance on its neighboring countries, and the Indus Waters Treaty is an example of good neighborliness. However, the treaty is under pressure due to dam construction and other factors. Water forms the foundation of economic development, food security, and environmental stability.
He emphasized that water pollution is also increasing at an alarming rate, water reserves are depleting rapidly, and Pakistan is among the top 10 countries severely affected by climate change. Pakistan’s rising temperatures are significantly higher than the global average, making adherence to agreements essential for regional peace and stability.
The Prime Minister presented various proposals to address water issues, stressing the need for strong political will and leadership to tackle challenges. He warned that without global action, the future could face severe difficulties. He also highlighted the importance of sharing research and technology related to water among nations.
