The Supreme Court has rejected the government’s request to allow military courts to announce case verdicts.
A seven-member constitutional bench, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard appeals against declaring the trial of civilians in military courts null and void.
During the hearing, Justice Musarrat Hilali remarked that permitting military courts to announce verdicts would mean acknowledging their jurisdiction. Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail emphasized, “We request all lawyers to assist us in completing this case.”
Justice Naeem Afghan questioned, “Explain how the anti-terrorism courts transferred the accused to military custody. Was there any reasoned order issued by the ATC courts? Note this question and respond to it later if needed.”
During the proceedings, lawyer Salman Akram Raja stated, “We also have objections to certain parts of Justice Munib Akhtar’s written judgment, and I will provide arguments on this.”
Subsequently, the constitutional bench rejected the government’s request and adjourned the hearing on the appeals against declaring the trial of civilians in military courts null and void until tomorrow.
