Former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has addressed the controversy surrounding his remarks about cricketers from the 1990s era.
Taking to social media, Hafeez clarified that certain media outlets misrepresented his statement, emphasizing that he did not intend to personally attack anyone.
He stated, “My remarks were solely about Pakistan’s inability to win ICC tournaments in the 1990s, nothing more. However, they were presented in a way that made it seem like I was targeting an individual.”
Hafeez further explained that despite having legendary players, Pakistan failed to win ICC events in 1996, 1999, and 2003, following their 1992 World Cup triumph.
Earlier, during a discussion on Pakistan’s poor performance in the ICC Champions Trophy, Hafeez referenced the mega stars of the 90s, stating:
“The 90s era produced several superstar cricketers for Pakistan, but they did not win any ICC tournaments for us. Our performance in 1996 was below expectations, and in 1999, we reached the final but suffered a disappointing defeat.”
Hafeez also recalled how Pakistan’s cricket suffered a setback in 2008 but bounced back by winning the 2009 T20 World Cup under Younis Khan and later secured the 2017 Champions Trophy under Sarfaraz Ahmed, restoring the nation’s morale.
During the discussion, he questioned Shoaib Akhtar, asking: “Can you name any ICC tournament that the 90s cricketers won for us? They were mega superstars, but no ICC event was secured under them.”
