Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in terrorism incidents, placing the country second on the Global Terrorism Index 2025.
The report, released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), analyzes terrorism trends and their impact over the past 17 years.
In 2024, terrorism incidents in Pakistan surged by 45%.
In 2023, a total of 517 attacks were reported, which escalated to 1,099 in 2024 — the highest annual increase in a decade and the first time the number of attacks crossed 1,000.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) emerged as the deadliest terrorist group in the country, responsible for 52% of the fatalities in 2024.
TTP carried out 482 attacks in 2024, resulting in 558 deaths — a 91% increase compared to 293 deaths in 2023.
The report highlighted that the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan has provided cross-border safe havens for terrorists, leading to a significant rise in attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
The deadliest attack of 2024 was carried out by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) at Quetta Railway Station, claiming 25 lives.
Baloch militant group attacks surged from 116 to 504, with fatalities quadrupling to 388.
