Algerian Olympic champion boxer Imane Khelif has decided not to participate in the Eindhoven Boxing Cup being held in the Netherlands.
The 26-year-old initially showed interest in competing and making a return to the boxing ring, but she did not register for the Netherlands event.
According to the tournament’s media director, the decision not to participate was made solely by Imane Khelif and not by the organizers.
World Boxing has recently mandated gender tests for all boxers, and the organization specifically named Imane Khelif, stating that gender verification would be required before any competition.
Less than a week after World Boxing made gender testing mandatory, news emerged that Imane Khelif had opted out of the Eindhoven Boxing Cup.
It is worth noting that Imane Khelif won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics but became embroiled in a gender-related controversy during the event.
Since then, questions have been raised regarding her eligibility to compete in women’s boxing events.
