Beijing showcased its military might on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II, where China introduced some of the world’s most advanced weapons. Among the highlights were high-energy laser systems and powerful microwave weapons, both of which are being hailed as revolutionary tools in modern warfare.
The weapons were displayed alongside anti-drone missile and artillery systems, underlining their role in countering emerging aerial threats. Experts noted that laser weapons are capable of destroying drones within seconds, thanks to their ability to identify, lock onto, and track a moving target with extreme precision.
High-energy laser systems are being described as low-cost and highly effective because they provide unlimited ammunition and accuracy at a fraction of traditional defense costs. Meanwhile, high-power microwave weapons disable drones by burning out their electronic components with intense electromagnetic radiation. Analysts say these systems are especially significant because they can neutralize swarms of drones simultaneously.
The parade also offered the first public glimpse of the “LY-1 shipborne laser weapon,” designed for deployment on warships. Experts believe the system is not limited to drones—it can also target anti-ship missiles and enemy optical sensors, potentially transforming the dynamics of naval warfare.
