India has opened the spillways of Baglihar and Salal dams after water levels in the Chenab River rose sharply due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas. Following the move, the Indian High Commission formally notified Pakistan about the risk of flooding, warning that large volumes of water are also being released into the Sutlej River.
According to Indian media reports, intense rainfall in northern regions has led to a surge in the Chenab’s water level, forcing authorities to open the Baglihar dam spillways first and later the gates of the Salal dam as well. Despite these measures, the river continues to experience dangerous levels of flooding.
In a separate communication, the Indian High Commission informed the Government of Pakistan that water is being discharged at Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream in the Sutlej River. The letter stated that this release is expected to cause high-level flooding in the Sutlej, urging caution in downstream areas.
In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources has issued a flood alert, directing relevant departments and provincial authorities to take immediate precautionary steps. Emergency teams have been instructed to remain on high alert, with preparations underway to relocate vulnerable communities to safer areas if needed.
