The strategic defense agreement signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has triggered concern in New Delhi, according to Pakistan’s former High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, who said the development could significantly impact the regional balance of power.
Basit noted that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have always shared deep and historic ties, and the newly signed pact elevates these relations to a new level. He further remarked that Israel’s recent attack on Qatar has shaken the Arab world, making regional countries more determined to enhance their security cooperation.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs gave a cautious response to the defense pact yesterday. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told the media that the Indian government was aware of the agreement and was closely monitoring the situation. He emphasized that India remained fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and ensuring comprehensive security across all sectors.
The landmark agreement was formally signed by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It underscores the joint commitment of both nations to strengthen security and work toward peace and stability in the region and globally.
According to the official statement, the pact reinforces mutual defense against any potential aggression. A key clause specifies that any armed attack against one country will be considered an attack on both, binding them to a collective response.
The signing ceremony was followed by a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, attended by Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and other ministers. The discussions focused on bilateral relations and defense cooperation, with the Saudi Crown Prince assuring Pakistan of full support.
