A performance review report released by the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) states that the current National Assembly has set a new record for the highest legislation among recent assemblies. The report notes that reliance on presidential ordinances remained relatively low, with most legislative work completed within the parliament.
According to the report, the National Assembly worked for 193 hours in the previous parliamentary year, while in the recently concluded year it worked for a total of 231 hours with longer sittings, indicating increased parliamentary activity. During this period, a new law was also passed to keep lawmakers’ asset details confidential and limit public access.
The report states that the second parliamentary year of the 16th National Assembly ran from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. During this period, 84 sessions of the assembly were held, compared with 93 sessions in the first parliamentary year, reflecting a decrease of about 9.7 percent.
It further notes that Defense Minister Khawaja Asif was the most vocal member in the assembly. Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Omar Ayub, and Barrister Gohar also delivered lengthy speeches during the sessions. The report also highlights that the post of Leader of the Opposition remained vacant for about five months, while quorum was pointed out 19 times during the sittings.
