Due to rising tensions in the Gulf region, major global shipping companies have imposed heavy war risk surcharges on cargo shipments heading to Gulf countries. The move is expected to significantly increase transportation costs for commercial goods.
Shipping company Hapag Lloyd has announced a war risk surcharge ranging from 1500 to 3500 dollars per container for shipments bound for Gulf destinations. The company stated that the decision was taken due to growing security risks in the region.
Another major shipping operator, CMA shipping line, has also introduced an emergency surcharge on cargo shipments, which may reach up to 4000 dollars on certain routes.
According to the official notices issued by these companies, the war risk surcharge will apply to all new bookings. The surcharge will not only apply to cargo heading toward the Persian Gulf but also to containers traveling through the Red Sea routes.
