The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries and adopted a resolution by a large majority. Thirteen members voted in favor of the resolution, while China and Russia were absent during the voting.
The vote was held on a draft resolution presented by Gulf countries, which described Iran’s attacks on neighboring states as a serious threat to regional peace and stability. Pakistan also voted in favor of the resolution and was among the countries that jointly supported it.
During the meeting, Bahrain’s representative informed the council that the resolution condemning Iran’s attacks had received the support of 135 countries, which is considered an unusually high number in the history of the United Nations. Previously, a resolution related to Ebola had received the support of 134 countries.
Addressing the Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, stated that Pakistan had also condemned the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran while expressing concern over actions that have increased tensions in the region. He added that two Pakistani nationals were killed in Iranian attacks on the United Arab Emirates.
Asim Iftikhar said that the ongoing tensions in the region could pose a serious threat to global peace and stability. He stated that Pakistan supports Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but believes that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy rather than the use of force. He also emphasized that millions of Pakistanis reside in Gulf countries and that escalating tensions are a matter of concern for them as well.
At the meeting, the representative of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Abushahab, called for effective and decisive action against Iran’s actions. He said that the Iranian attacks are not only an attempt to spread fear in the region but also pose a serious threat to international peace. He added that Gulf countries are confronting these attacks and have shown unity and restraint during this challenging period.
The Russian representative said that the current situation in the Middle East is deeply regrettable and that targeting civilian populations in any country is unacceptable. He stated that attacks on civilian populations in Arab and Gulf states are condemnable but argued that the regional crisis escalated when the United States and Israel carried out attacks on Iran.
The Russian envoy described the adopted resolution as one-sided, saying that it does not mention or condemn the attacks on Tehran. According to him, Iran claims it is exercising its right of self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and maintains that its strikes target US bases.
The Russian representative further stated that according to the US Central Command, American bases located in Gulf countries, including Bahrain, were used for attacks against Iran. He called on all parties to reduce tensions and avoid further attacks.
The US representative strongly criticized Iran during the meeting and said that international cooperation is needed to stop Iranian attacks. He stated that Iran continues to target civilian areas and that 135 countries around the world stand against its actions.
The US envoy said that Iran and its allies are distorting facts in the Security Council. According to him, civilian locations such as a hotel in Dubai, a major oil refinery in Bahrain, and Dubai Airport were also targeted, which are not military bases.
He further stated that Iran is targeting civilian installations in several countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait, while cargo ships carrying food supplies have also been attacked. The US representative warned that Iran’s nuclear program could become a threat to global security and that the international community must make serious decisions regarding the matter.
China’s representative stated that attacks on civilian infrastructure in the Middle East must stop immediately. He emphasized that the war should never have started and that all military operations must cease at once.
The Chinese envoy said that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only solution to the conflict and urged all parties to pursue negotiations to reduce tensions.
The representative of the United Kingdom stated that his country does not want tensions in the region to escalate further. He condemned Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries, particularly Bahrain, and stressed the importance of ensuring civilian safety.
The representative of Bahrain informed the council that the resolution against Iran had received support from 135 countries worldwide. He clarified that Bahrain’s territory was not used for attacks on Iran and said that sirens were sounding in his country while civilian facilities were being targeted, creating a dangerous situation in the region.
