Norway’s Ministry of Energy has announced plans to reopen three gas fields in the North Sea to help supply gas to Europe, with production expected to resume in 2028.
The announcement by Europe’s largest gas exporter comes at a time when the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have further exposed vulnerabilities in Europe’s energy supply system.
According to reports, the three gas fields were shut down in 1998, and estimates suggest that the reserves may contain the equivalent of 90 million to 120 million barrels of oil.
The Norwegian Ministry of Energy stated that gas from these fields will be exported to the German city of Emden, while liquefied gas shipments will also be sent to the United Kingdom.
Experts believe that Norway’s decision could play an important role in strengthening Europe’s future energy supply and ensuring greater stability in the gas market.
