Brazilian football star Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s Round of 16 defeat to Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Norway national football team defeated five-time world champions Brazil national football team 2-1 in New Jersey, ending Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
Erling Haaland scored both goals for Norway, while Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty for Brazil. His late goal was not enough to prevent elimination.
Neymar broke down in tears after the final whistle before confirming that his journey with the Brazilian national team had come to an end. He said his international career had started at the same stadium and was now ending there.
The 34-year-old made his Brazil debut against the United States on August 10, 2010, at the same New Jersey stadium where he played his final international match.
Neymar ends his international career as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 80 goals in 130 appearances, three more than Brazilian legend Pelé.
