US President Donald Trump has said that the United States carried out attacks on Iran in response to alleged Iranian strikes on maritime vessels.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump warned Iran that if such actions were repeated, the consequences would be far more severe.
Earlier, the US president had threatened further strikes on Iran but ruled out the possibility of launching a full-scale war against Tehran.
Trump had also said that the United States could take control of Iran’s Kharg Island.
US Vice President JD Vance also warned Iran that any attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz would trigger a response from the US military.
Speaking at a news briefing in Washington, Vance said US attacks would continue until Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz and stopped firing on ships.
He said the basic agreement was that if Iran fired on vessels, the United States would respond with overwhelming force.
The US vice president said Iran must honour the agreement or face the same consequences it experienced the previous night.
Meanwhile, the US military has carried out fresh airstrikes in several Iranian areas, including Sirik, Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, Konarak, Iranshahr and Abu Musa Island.
The US military said the additional strikes were being conducted in response to recent alleged Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and their crews passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US military, the bombing campaign aims to limit Iran’s ability to threaten the free movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media reported that a projectile fragment fell on Imam Ali Hospital during the US attack on Chabahar, while strikes on a maritime traffic control tower and a depot were also reported.
