The Supreme Court of Pakistan has acquitted the three remaining death row convicts in the Kot Radha Kishan brick kiln case involving the killing of Christian couple Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife Shama Bibi.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed ordered the acquittal of Irfan, Mehdi and Riaz after hearing their appeals.
The apex court also dismissed the Punjab government’s appeal against the acquittal of 102 other accused in the case.
The incident took place on November 4, 2014, when an angry mob, following allegations of blasphemy, assaulted Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife Shama Bibi before burning them alive in a brick kiln.
Police subsequently registered cases against hundreds of individuals.
An Anti-Terrorism Court had sentenced five accused to death and handed various prison terms to others.
Later, the Lahore High Court acquitted two of the five death row convicts while upholding the death sentences of the remaining three.
With the latest Supreme Court ruling, the remaining three death row convicts have also been acquitted.
