As the total number of fatalities continues to rise, the powerful earthquake that took place in Afghanistan has taken on the status of a national tragedy.
The most recent statistics indicate that there have been over 1,411 fatalities and over 3,250 injuries. Furthermore, there have been over 3,250 people who have died and been seriously wounded.
There were at least 3,251 people injured and more than 1,400 people lost their lives as a result of the devastating earthquake that occurred yesterday, according to the official reports.
An official spokesperson for the Afghan Red Crescent stated that more than 8,000 residential houses were destroyed, which resulted in a large number of families being displaced from their homes.
At least six districts in the province of Kunar were severely negatively impacted, making it the location of the most severe damage. Confirmation of fatalities has been received from five different provinces.
Even though rescue operations are still taking place in the affected regions, authorities are concerned that the number of fatalities could increase even further because a large number of people are still trapped under the homes.
The quake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter in central Afghanistan at a depth of 8 kilometers. Aftershocks of 4.5 magnitude were also felt later. In Kunar, three villages were wiped out entirely, while Jalalabad city and several other provinces also reported severe destruction.
