The Supreme Court Practices and Procedures Bill has been approved by the Senate. There were 60 votes in favor of the Supreme Court Practice and Procedures Bill and 19 votes against.
After the approval of the bill, opposition members protested strongly while members of the ruling party gathered around the Senate Chairman’s dais.
Earlier, the Judicial Reforms Bill was also approved by the National Assembly.
According to this bill, the power of suo moto will be given to three judges of the Supreme Court. Prime Minister’s Law Adviser, Nazeer Tarar, said that the Supreme Court Practices and Procedures Bill 2023 was handed over to the Standing Committee. The Committee has recommended some amendments to the bill.
Yesterday, the Law Minister, Nazeer Tarar, presented the committee’s report to the house regarding judicial reforms. The Law Minister said that Article 191 of the Constitution states that constitutional amendment is not necessary. The Councils of Pakistan have raised this issue in the House several times. Nazeer Tarar said that during his tenure, 47 laws were passed in a joint session of Parliament.
