Bangladesh’s Election Commissioner, Brigadier (R) Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah, stated during a press briefing that comprehensive security arrangements for the parliamentary elections have been finalized with the assistance of law enforcement agencies, and a total of 50 political parties are participating in the electoral process nationwide.
He said that parliamentary elections are being held in the country along with a referendum on constitutional and legal reforms, making the electoral process particularly significant.
According to Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah, 4.5 million new voters have been added to the updated voter list, while approximately 2 million names were removed from the previous list due to the individuals’ deaths. He noted that out of 60 registered political parties in the country, 50 are actively contesting the elections.
The Election Commissioner further revealed that 10 new political parties have recently emerged and are taking part in the elections, reflecting increased political activity in the country. He explained that candidates are allowed to spend up to 10 taka per voter in their constituency, meaning that in a constituency with 300,000 voters, a candidate may spend up to 3 million taka.
He also clarified that in constituencies with fewer than 250,000 voters, the maximum expenditure limit has been set at 2.5 million taka. Any violation of the prescribed spending limits may result in legal action. According to the Election Commissioner, all candidates must conduct their campaigns within the defined financial limits to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.
