Kathmandu: Former Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, has agreed to take charge as interim Prime Minister amid the political chaos triggered by the so-called “Gen Z Revolution.”
The crisis began last week when the Nepali government imposed a blanket ban on major social media platforms including Facebook and TikTok. The move sparked widespread anger, particularly among the youth, who quickly mobilized into nationwide protests under the banner of Gen Z.
The demonstrations soon turned violent, with government buildings set ablaze and clashes breaking out between protesters and security forces. At least 30 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured during the unrest.
The military was eventually called in to restore order. Following the deployment, protest leaders held talks with army officials to discuss the country’s political future.
Gen Z protesters have demanded early elections, while also proposing the name of Sushila Karki to lead an interim government. Karki has accepted the proposal in principle, paving the way for a significant shift in Nepal’s political landscape.
Analysts believe that if Karki does assume office, it would mark a historic first for Nepal — a former Chief Justice stepping in to steer the country through one of its most turbulent political storms.
