Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah has said that the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is a federal initiative, but assistance for flood-affected people will be managed at the provincial level. He indicated that a proposal is under consideration to transform BISP into the Benazir Employment Scheme, providing not only financial aid but also job opportunities to citizens.
Speaking on the television program Geo Pakistan, Rana Sanaullah said the government’s desire is for BISP to evolve beyond cash transfers and become a means of creating employment. He noted that such a scheme is reportedly being discussed, aimed at making the program more effective and sustainable.
He explained that independent surveys have been conducted in flood-hit areas, and assistance will be provided based on verified data. He also said that dialogue with senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders is possible, since BISP is a good program that can be improved further through collective efforts.
The adviser stressed that the federal government has suggested provinces also adopt the program to ensure its impact is broader and more effective. He termed the issue a serious one, requiring cooperation among political parties. He added that a committee is already functioning in Punjab to address mutual concerns, and political statements should be taken in a constructive spirit.
It is worth mentioning that First Lady Asifa Bhutto Zardari recently said that not utilizing BISP for helping flood victims would amount to negligence. She emphasized that BISP already has the data and outreach capacity to assist affected families, making it the fastest and most effective channel for delivering relief.
