The Sindh government has accelerated preparations to launch Pakistan’s first government-run taxi service, alongside an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, which is expected to be rolled out by December 2025.
An important meeting chaired by Sindh’s Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, was held at his office in Karachi. The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zaman, Managing Director of Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, and other senior officials. The minister was given a detailed briefing on ongoing transport projects in the province.
Speaking at the meeting, Memon said the Sindh government will be the first to launch its own taxi service in Pakistan, with EV taxis also being introduced by the end of the year. He emphasized that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has taken a special interest in this initiative, aiming to provide citizens with modern, eco-friendly, and quality transport services. In the initial phase, specific taxis will be allocated for women passengers.
Highlighting past initiatives, Memon noted that Sindh was the first to introduce eco-friendly EV buses in Pakistan and the region’s first Pink Bus service dedicated to women. Additionally, the Pink Scooty program for female students also gained significant public appreciation. Now, the government is set to expand these efforts by introducing Pink EV taxis for women, along with Pakistan’s first EV taxi service.
He further stated that to tackle Karachi’s growing transport challenges, new double-decker buses and additional EV buses will also be introduced soon. Work is underway on building EV infrastructure, including charging stations, to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability and success.
Memon reiterated that providing women with safe, affordable, and reliable transport is a top priority for the Sindh government. He also pointed out that Karachi offers vast opportunities for international investors in the transport sector, and the provincial government is committed to extending full cooperation to potential investors.
