Islamabad: The Secretary of Information Technology has admitted before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that the fault in the internet cable has not yet been fully resolved. He stated that repair work by the consortium is still underway, and Pakistan’s internet traffic has been shifted to alternative routes to minimize service disruptions.
The committee also discussed the issue of weak mobile signals nationwide. It decided to summon PTA officials to the next meeting to seek a detailed explanation regarding the poor network performance.
During the session, a detailed briefing was given on the Islamabad IT Park project. The project director informed the committee that 80 percent of the work has already been completed, and the remaining construction is progressing rapidly.
Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima informed the meeting that the project is being completed in collaboration with a Korean company. However, due to delays, the Prime Minister has ordered an inquiry to address the issues hindering its completion.
Shaza Fatima further stated that the shortage of spectrum and ongoing legal disputes have intensified network issues. The country currently operates on the 274 MHz spectrum, which is insufficient to meet current demands. She added that the government is working to conduct a spectrum auction by December or January to overcome these challenges.
