Authorities have formally charged the attacker arrested in connection with the shooting incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
According to a foreign news agency, Australian police confirmed that the injured suspect arrested at the scene has been charged with terrorism-related offences, along with a total of 50 criminal charges. Officials stated that the legal process against the accused has now entered a formal phase.
Meanwhile, Philippine presidential spokesperson Claire Castro said there is no evidence that the Bondi attackers received any terrorist training during visits to the Philippines. She rejected reports portraying the Philippines as a training hub for ISIS, stating that no proof has been presented to support such claims.
Philippine military spokesperson Colonel Francel Padilla also stated that no major counterterrorism operations have been conducted since the beginning of 2024. He added that rebel groups are currently fragmented and lack any organized leadership.
It is worth recalling that three days ago, two armed individuals opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing 15 people and injuring 40 others. One of the attackers was arrested at the scene, while the second was killed during police retaliatory fire.
The deceased attacker was identified as Sajid Akram, a resident of Hyderabad in India’s Telangana state. His son, Naveed Akram, holds Australian citizenship. Sajid Akram had traveled to Australia on a student visa in 1998, while his son was born in Australia.
