In the Toshakhana-II case, the court has awarded 17 years of imprisonment each to PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.
Special Judge Central Arjumand Shah announced the verdict inside Adiala Jail in the presence of both accused, while none of their legal counsels appeared before the court at the time of the ruling.
According to the verdict, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were handed an additional 7 years of imprisonment each under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, bringing their total sentence to 17 years. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 164 million on the couple.
Case Background
The Toshakhana-II proceedings began on July 13, 2024, when NAB arrested Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi inside Adiala Jail. They remained under NAB custody for 37 days, after which the investigation was completed and the reference was submitted before the accountability court on August 20.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision restoring NAB amendments, the case was transferred to the FIA Anti-Corruption Court on September 9, 2024. FIA subsequently added Anti-Corruption Act Section 5 and PPC Section 409 to the case.
The trial formally commenced inside Adiala Jail on September 16 and continued for nearly one year.
Out of 24 witnesses, statements of 20 were recorded while four were dropped by the prosecution. Key witnesses included former Military Secretary Brig (R) Muhammad Ahmad, private appraiser Sohaib Abbasi, and former principal secretary Inamullah.
Nature of Allegations
The couple is accused of failing to deposit a Bulgari jewelry set gifted by the Saudi Crown Prince in 2021. According to the FIA, the original value of the set exceeded Rs 71.5 million, whereas a private appraiser was pressured to declare its worth as only Rs 5.9 million.
The set — comprising a necklace, bracelet, ring, and earrings — was neither submitted to the Toshakhana nor properly valued, and influence was allegedly used to obtain an undervalued assessment.
Private appraiser Sohaib Abbasi stated that Inam Shah, the former principal secretary, pressured him into undervaluation. More than 80 hearings took place inside Adiala Jail, with the prosecution team representing the state, while the defense was led by Arshad Tabraiz, Qausain Faisal Mufti, and Barrister Salman Safdar.
