Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, has stated that Pakistan exercised its inherent right of self-defence in May 2025 in response to Indian aggression, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.
Addressing a debate at the UN Security Council, Asim Iftikhar said that unilateral actions taken outside the framework of the UN Charter undermine collective security and damage the credibility of multilateral institutions.
He noted that Pakistan itself has been a victim of such violations, adding that India carried out unprovoked military aggression in May 2025, which constituted a clear violation of international law and Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The Pakistani envoy emphasized that under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Pakistan exercised its inherent right of self-defence, and asserted that any so-called “new normal” emerging from coercion or exceptionalism is unacceptable.
He further stressed that the Security Council should establish effective mechanisms to ensure systematic monitoring of the implementation of its resolutions and should enhance structured engagement with the International Court of Justice.
