The Election Commission has completed preparations for the local government elections in Punjab.A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in which the issue of local body elections in Punjab and Islamabad was discussed.
During the meeting, the Election Commission officials briefed that they are ready to hold the local government elections in Islamabad and are prepared to provide the schedule. The Ministry of Interior has been requested to notify the number of reserved seats by July 12.
The Election Commission also demanded rules regarding election expenses for candidates from the Ministry of Interior.
Regarding the local government elections in Punjab, it was informed during the meeting that the registration process for election groups in Punjab will be completed by July 17.
The officials of the Commission further stated that the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is not possible for the local government elections. Therefore, the Punjab government should be advised to consider the use of EVMs and i-voting procedures and make necessary amendments to the Local Government Act and rules for immediate elections.
