President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, after which the Ministry of Law issued a notification for his appointment.
It should be noted that the special parliamentary committee established for the appointment of the Chief Justice nominated Supreme Court Judge Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan yesterday.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was first, Justice Muneeb Akhtar was second and Justice Yahya Afridi was third in terms of seniority for speaking of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. However, a two-thirds majority approved the name of Yahya Afridi in the parliamentary special committee meeting.
During the meeting, the sources said that in the committee, the People’s Party and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) suggested the name of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, while the members of the Muslim League (N) and other parties insisted on the name of Yahya Afridi, while P T members boycotted the meeting.
The committee sent the name of Yahya Afridi to the Prime Minister and on his advice, it was sent to the President.
The President approved Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. He will be the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan who will take oath of office on October 26.
The President has appointed Justice Yahya under Articles 175A (3), 177 and 179 of the Constitution for the next three years from October 26.
It should be remembered that the current Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa’s term is ending on October 25.

The majority of the special parliamentary committee constituted for the appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan nominated Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.
After his primary education, he graduated from Government College, Lahore, and also obtained his MA degree in Economics from Punjab University, Lahore.
After receiving his initial education in law in Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi also obtained an LLM degree from Jesus College, Cambridge University on a Commonwealth scholarship.
Justice Yahya Afridi began his professional journey in 1990, practicing as a High Court advocate.
He started practicing as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2004. He has also served as Assistant Advocate General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He was appointed Additional Judge of Peshawar High Court in 2010 and appointed as Permanent Judge on 15 March 2012.
He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court on 30 December 2016, while on 28 June 2018, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Justice Yahya Afridi heard various cases in the Supreme Court as a judge, including his involvement in the larger bench in the case related to the reserved seats of the Sunni Unity Council.
Justice Yahya Afridi also wrote his dissenting note in the judgment related to this case.
The nominated Chief Justice was also part of the 9-member larger bench of the Supreme Court on the Presidential Reference against the execution of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
59-year-old Justice Yahya Afridi had declined to join the three-member judges committee of the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Ordinance 2024.
Designated Chief Justice Yahya Afridi will become the 30th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan after taking the oath of office.
