Due to potential security threats during the holy month of Muharram, the Ministry of Interior has approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army across the country. A formal summary was sent to the federal cabinet, which has now been approved and issued as an official notification.
According to a press release by the Ministry of Interior, army troops will perform security duties in all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and the federal capital, Islamabad. The deployment follows requests from provincial governments and administrative bodies for enhanced security at sensitive locations during Muharram.
The army’s deployment has been authorized under Article 245 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which allows the military to assist civil institutions. Military personnel will collaborate with local police and Rangers for joint patrolling, surveillance of sensitive areas, and maintaining law and order.
Sources indicate that surveillance systems will be further strengthened in sensitive cities and districts through the use of CCTV cameras. Additionally, the temporary suspension of internet services is also under consideration in areas that have experienced sectarian unrest in the past.
The Ministry of Interior has appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity or unusual circumstances during Muharram to the relevant authorities immediately. This measure aims to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain peace and security.
