Dhaka: The government of Bangladesh has announced the closure of universities across the country until Eid due to rising petroleum prices and concerns over an energy crisis.
According to foreign media reports, authorities decided to start Eid holidays earlier, under which all public and private universities will remain closed from today until Eid.
The government said the decision was taken in light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the resulting energy crisis, aiming to reduce electricity and fuel consumption.
Officials stated that the measure will help reduce electricity usage and also lower traffic congestion, which will decrease fuel consumption.
Authorities explained that university campuses, residential hostels, classrooms, laboratories and air conditioning systems consume large amounts of electricity, so early holidays will help reduce pressure on the country’s energy system.
It is worth noting that schools in Bangladesh were already closed during Ramadan, and now universities will also remain closed until Eid al Fitr.
