The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has released its latest weekly data on sugar prices, revealing that the commodity has seen a noticeable surge across several major cities within just seven days, adding further pressure on consumers already struggling with inflation.
According to the report, Karachi witnessed the steepest increase, where sugar prices jumped by Rs 20 per kilogram in a single week. As a result, residents are now paying Rs 220 per kg, making it the most expensive sugar rate in the country.
In Hyderabad, the price climbed by Rs 15 per kg, reaching Rs 215 per kg, reflecting a similarly worrying trend.
In Quetta, sugar prices rose by Rs 2, bringing the new rate to Rs 216 per kg. Meanwhile, the price in Khuzdar stands at Rs 210 per kg, Larkana at Rs 205 per kg, and across Islamabad and the Punjab region, sugar is being sold at Rs 190 per kg.
In Peshawar, the price has also reached Rs 190 per kg, whereas Sukkur recorded a rate of Rs 195 per kg.
According to the PBS report, the average national price of sugar increased by 37 paisas over the past week, taking the average to Rs 189.98 per kg. A week earlier, the average stood at Rs 189.61, while during the same period last year, sugar was priced at just Rs 131.85 per kg, underscoring the sharp year-on-year inflation.
Experts warn that the rising cost of sugar not only burdens consumers but also contributes directly to overall food inflation, potentially driving up prices of other essential commodities in the coming weeks.
